Cost and thermal efficiency are top priorities for homeowners during the winter months. Use these tips to help jumpstart your next home improvement project and keep your home warm and dry this winter.

Keeping your home warm and dry through the bitter winter months is the primary goal behind these popular home renovation projects. These tips can also help you save some money. In a struggling economy, cost-efficiency is more important than ever, making heat retention and protection against moisture top priorities for homeowners.

    * Heat Retention: Insulation and Weatherproofing
Keeping warm, while remaining cost-efficient, is important, and in this year’s economy, homeowners are being more diligent than ever. Making small home improvements, like installing a digital thermostat, caulking around doors and windows, and repairing or reinstalling insulation between walls and ceilings are all projects that can help efficiently retain the heat in your home, not to mention the money in your wallet.
* Exterior Protection: Roofing and Siding
Protecting your home from nasty winter weather is essential not only to your family’s good health and comfort, but also to the life of your home. Maintaining roofing and siding can also extend the life of interior elements like pipes, insulation, ceilings, and walls.
* Basement Renovation and Waterproofing
Water and moisture are the top causes of basement damage, so keeping your home protected during wet, winter months is essential. Sometimes, waterproofing is all a basement needs, but a complete basement renovation can be a rewarding winter home improvement project.

Winter is also a great time to take advantage of sales at retail stores and home service companies. Some contractors have greater availability during the winter months, allowing you to be choosy and even negotiate the price you need to get your next home improvement project on its way.

Small spaces have great potential when it comes to house interior design. Make more room while giving each space your unique design expression by applying these 7 rules the pros use!

1. Slim Down – Get a large box, basket or bag and sift through those small accents. Too many little things sitting around a small room will clog of the room’s space quickly. It’s amazing how much air space you will create by being super specific about what you have placed on table tops and shelves.

2. Trim Down – Heavy, bulky window treatments not only block the limited light in your small room but are also space hoggers. Free those windows by using shades, blinds or even shutters. There are some gorgeous options to be made or purchased at your favorite house interior design store. Have a little extra money to spend, have your blinds custom designed in fabrics that compliment the rest of your room’s decor.

3. Color Down – Though a variety of color breaks up a large house, too much color in a small one will work against your already limited amount of space. It is best to paint all the walls one color or use a similar pallet hue for small subtle changes from room to room.

4. Lighten Up – Pull in that limited light with the use of mirrors positioned directly across from a window. Use semi gloss paint to reflect the light and keep your furniture polished and your appliances clean.

5. Fabric Up – It is better to fabric up your accents and leave the large furniture pieces to solids. If you already have a busy couch with a floral print, shapes or strips, consider toning things down a bit with a slip cover. Then, bring in those extra fabrics in your accents to provide some visual depth and emotional interest. Have fun with this part of your house interior design project!

Bring in those weaves, patterns, and quilted fabrics for this.

6. Liven Up – Nothing says open space and health like fresh plants placed around a room. Potted plants are preferred but bountiful bouquets regularly freshened up will also work well.

Limited for room? Positioning a potted plant in front of the fireplace mantle during the warmest time of the year is a great use of that space. Angle your furniture and use the extra space to display an indoor tree or palm.

7. Step Up – Light bare wood is always the best and beautiful of option for giving a small room a larger appearance. Flooring in an apartment cannot be changed but it can be changed up! Place a lighter area rug on top of the existing carpet. Or in the case of a dark linoleum find a light bamboo or Berber to bring out the light.

The teen years should be called the bedroom years. A computer, home entertainment system and a bed provide them with all they think they need. If it were not for the occasional trip to the kitchen, parents would never see their offspring.

There comes a time when your child will declare their room boring or childish. The American Girl Dolls or Brio Trains will be packed for the attic along with the posters from their favorite Disney movies. They are ready to express themselves in their own creative way. As a parent, your job is to remind yourself of what you wanted at this age and how much you would have loved it if your parents had been open to your ideas. I was lucky. My mom gave me the freedom to paint my room trim and closet door lime green. At the time I ( and my friends) thought it was so pretty. I am not sure that was true and it is probably the reason I want only white trim in my home today.

A cool teen room starts out with a theme. For boys, skateboarding, surfing or technology are popular. A giant mural depicting a surfer experiencing the ultimate wave or a skateboarder doing a 360 in the park will give an awesome impact to a room. You can find these as well as removable wall graphics online. Guys are often most comfortable with the colors of their favorite team or school. Painting the walls a neutral shade and then bringing in those colors with the comforter and window treatment will look great. Old t-shirts from favorite events can be turned into pillows for the bed. Hang plenty of shelves for them to display equipment, trophies and souvenir hats.

Stripes and polka dots are strong favorites with teen girls. You can use paint to create this look on the wall or purchase a comforter splashed with dots or lined with stripes. Animal prints are also a hit. A zebra is fun, especially when paired with a color such as yellow or bright green. Teens crave the exotic. Anything which will make them stand out is good.

Visit the paint store and let your teen play in the paint sample cards. Encourage them to think about colors that are different from the typical pink, purple, primary blue and red. Look at the color cards furnished by the paint companies. The combinations they suggest will spark your imagination. Do not worry about the future. Primers are excellent these days and they will cover the wildest colors, should you ever need to repaint.

Do not be surprised if they want to paint their room black. If you are not thrilled about this for the entire room redirect them to paint their furniture in this dark color. Just painting one wall in black can create a stunning accent behind their bed. Blackboard paint is also a fun choice. A large area painted in this specialty paint lets them express themselves with easily changed drawings or song lyrics. Their friends will want to leave messages and sketches on the blackboard so have plenty of colored chalk on hand.

Decorating your childs room can be a fun project. Give them a budget and a few guidelines then listen to what they have to say. They may actually think you are cool for encouraging their creativity.

One of the first things to keep in mind about decorating your home is why you are doing it. Decorating is an amazing thing because you are making the space you live in more beautiful. What can be more important and more fun that figuring out ways to make the most of your space?

Another great thing about decorating is that it allows you to learn who you are and the things you like and then show it off to others. You can learn so much about your friends just by seeing the place they choose to live in. You can get a sense of what they value and of the small things that make them uniquely who they are. Decorating is something that helps you gain more understanding of yourself. Be proud to show off who you are by decorating your house in a way you love.

Take your time decorating. Don’t allow yourself to be rushed or to be on a strict deadline. You will have much more fun and end up with a space you love if you take your time. Sift through magazines, photographs and catalogs for weeks if you have to just to gain good ideas for your own home. Learn from the mistakes and victories of your friends and families as you see their homes. Especially when you are making big decisions like what color to paint your wall or what kind of furniture to buy, taking your time will make all the difference.

Decorating can be a great way to involve your family in something fun together. Allow your spouse, your kids, or your roommates to help make decisions especially about areas they care about most. Give them reasonable boundaries, but within those boundaries let them choose things they enjoy. As long as you can make do with the space that you have, that is okay. Do not worry about anything else but in completing the decoration that you want to do so much. Have fun and relax while doing this. This is your time to express yourself.

When it comes to decorating the room for your baby, it is best to take your time before steaming ahead. It needs a bit of thought put into it and also you will need to get things that do not clash with everything else. For instance, the color of the paint needs to match with say the carpet and the furniture. If you know the sex of the baby then this can help you to choose a nice color scheme. If you do not know the sex of the baby then it is best to stick to a neutral unisex theme.

Choosing the color scheme is one of the first tasks that you should do. This then will help you to determine what furniture and carpets etc to use within the room. Also when it comes down to getting the furniture, make sure that you get the correct measurements. You should keep in mind that the room should not be too overcrowded; otherwise it will make the room look cramped. So make sure that you put the essentials in the room to make it look as nice as you intended it to.

It is always good to have an idea of what you want and how much you have to spend before buying everything. This can make things a lot easier for you and it can help eliminate any stress.

Are you Lacking Inspiration?

There are many sources of information and different tips that you can acquire to help with the decorating side of things. There are many magazines out there that offer decorating tips and pin point some of the latest trends. The internet is one of the best resources to use with a mass of information at your finger tips. You may see two different styles that you like and you may want to mix them up to get just what you want. This is a good idea but sometimes it may end up giving out a different result unless planned properly.

For those of you that desire to have your house decorated for each season, here a couple tips. Choose a few spaces that you will decorate seasonally, and use year-round decorations for other areas in the house. This way, clean-up needs and clutter are both cut down. For example, put up a couple shelves in a prominent place and adorn them with seasonal decorations, or set up a calendar area that showcases monthly décor. If you have young children at home, a cute way to decorate with durable, non-dangerous materials is to choose a stuffed animal and change what it wears with each month or season. To cut down on storage, consider revamping and reusing your crafts. Many crafts can be exchanged or reused for different seasons. One of the best examples is exchanging your wreath from one season to another by removing the flowers and replacing them with new flowers appropriate for that season.

Watering your plants is not exactly a difficult science; however, many of us do make the mistake of not giving our plants the right amount of water. It is all too easy to douse our plants with too much water. One problem with overwatering is that it washes out necessary nutrients from your plant’s soil. Overwatering your plant can also cause the roots to rot. One way to ensure your plant gets the proper amount of water is to use a watering bulb or other controlled watering devise. They are made to slowly release water into the soil in proper quantities.

An increasing tendency in wedding decorations is to use artificial or silk flowers. Roses by far are the prominent silk flower selection for weddings. Similarly, there is a growing trend for silk roses in homes today. Not only do silk roses last an extremely long time, but the similarity in appearance to real roses is almost perfect; both of these factors have led to the upswing in usage. The durability of the roses depends on how well they are maintained; they will last a couple years if they are not kept up, and decades if they are preserved well. There are many ways to decorate your house with roses—they can be added to a garland draped over a mantelpiece, or they can adorn a vase on a side table. When roses are placed in a flower arrangement, be sure to angle them so that they can be seen from any point in the room. Adding a scent to your roses also gives your home a nice touch.

Though many of us claim to be self-taught interior decorators, sometimes it is better to just go to the experts. Interior decorators can be somewhat pricey, so you will want to do your research and choose someone who matches your tastes and interests. Make sure to procure some models, illustrations, and recommendations from anyone you are considering. Interior decorators should have a book, a website, or a pamphlet showing their previous work with other clients. If you decide to contact previous customers, question them about the quality of the work and how well the decorator listened to the concerns and plans of their clients. These steps will help you feel sure that you are giving your money and your trust to someone you will feel happy with.

We should consider safety and ecology-friendly concerns. We should think ahead and choose the best mattress for child’s tender spine. Even before deciding on the purchase of new furniture for the kids we should think about the kids’ energy and sometimes destructive movements. So each and every piece of new furniture should undergo our test whether it is strong enough and child-friendly.

Children are fountains of energy! And we must remember that children’s rooms are not only for sleeping, but for active life, games, fun and even sport… we should foresee so many factors.

For example, walls: children will instinctively draw with pencils and crayons on it. So walls should be easily washable. Some parents prefer wall-papered, reasoning that they are more economical and ecological.

Other parents prefer glossy-paper-walls, since they are stronger, and can be washed and even painted several times. The variety is really vast and it allows parents to choose exactly what they like. As long as the colours are eye-friendly for a little person.

It has been scientifically proven that the children develop better if the walls are in pastel colours. It is even influencing the health of the children – they get sick less often, are less stressful and more productive with their homework. While bright colours and large figures, on the contrary, will bring tiredness and neuroses. Since a child’s room is a private space of your little ones where they should rest from the emotions of the day, the colours of the walls in children’s rooms should NOT be too bright.

If pastel tones seem to you too dull and not attractive, then you can choose good accessories, such as teddy bears, colourful lamps, hanging elements or paintings. When decorating, we should take notes of recent research and scientific recommendations. For example, posters and images from cartoons and modern movies should be avoided since it might have a negative effect on the child’ development. Much better and healthy for the body and for the mind to choose images of nature: for example, fruits – bright, natural multicolours, they will perfectly bring a huge difference into children’s world.

Moreover, fruits can introduce a child to the alphabet and healthy food. Each fruit can contain a smiling face. A very interesting idea that has been shared with me is how to make a child good friends with fruits from the very tender age. Very easy and creative: with the help of magical and healthy fairtytales. It should be narrated to the little one on a daily basis. Preferably it should be an individual story on each fruit that is a part of the room’s decoration. The fairytale should, in an easy and entertaining form, explain to the child about the fruit’s life-story and health benefits. The main aim of this methodology is to introduce little ones to the world of nature and to develop in children the love for healthy food. Besides, the child will feel very comfortable in his room, being amongst good friends – fruits, as these stories will live in his imagination for years.

When choosing the furniture, parents generally are divided into two groups. The first group declares that independence is above all. They are prepared to change furniture every 2-3 years, be it pedestals, shelves, beds, tables etc.

The second group of parents prefer long-term things. Everything – be it furniture or clothing need to be chosen for several years. ,For example, longer sleeves and trousers pipes are normally bought up oversize and rolled up. Always having an excuse that today everything is too expensive and child can wear the same shoes 2-3 years if they put in it extra pair of thick socks.

Anyway, again, it depends on an individual’s preference and choice but a professionals would recommend a golden middle road. Bed and chair – these are the two main items that should really be changed relevant to the child’s growth. A tiny tot requires a small cozy bed,a bigger child would prefer a bed with many shelves where he or she could store toys and accessories.

The teenager needs a good bed suitable for an grown-up, relevant to his new ‘adult’ status at school, college or home. The chair should be chosen just as carefully, preferably according to the child’s taste. If a child’s elbows are at table-height, then you can be sure that this chair is appropriate for him.

A bookshelf is a essential part of a child’s room and should be very functional. When a child is still small, the bookshelves can be used for his clothing, later it will be an ideal place for keeping his toys, then books. There will never be enough books as long as they are beneficial for child’s mind and heart. We should always be very careful in choosing the right literature for your little treasure.

Cottage style decorating is incredibly simple and it focuses on having space as well as keeping things either traditional or a little more modern. If you have small children then cottage style decorating might well just suit you down to the ground as it is mainly an uncluttered, simple style which does not provide much chance for accidents within the home. It is also extremely hardy and it can cope with the odd knock or scrape every now and again!

Antique furniture looks especially good in a cottage decorated home and you do not have to pay a fortune either – there are some particularly good bargains at your local flea market. One of the best things about cottage style decorating also is that everything does not have to match. You can have mismatched fabrics, mismatched colors and it will look perfectly fine. Whilst cottage style decorating may not be for everyone, it certainly has its admirers and more and more people are turning to its designs for their home. After all, it is much easier to simply throw a few bits together, have more space and keep it simple than it is to worry about every minute detail. Some people believe that cottage style decorating is more geared towards the older generation; however that is not always the case. Anybody with a love of interior decorating will like the style of cottage decorating as will all different ages. It all basically depends upon personal taste and what you would prefer. More and more people are choosing the cottage style these days because of its simplicity and of how easy it is to pick things up for the home. So, if you would like to decorate your home cottage style, you would certainly not be the only one!

Basic principals of interior design apply to any decorating project and using these principals of design does not cost a penny. Balance is one of these design concepts that needs to be considered with all decorating projects.

The simplest definition of the word balance in decorating is equilibrium. Often, designers use the word “visual weight” when they are referring to balance. A balanced interior features furniture, accessories, and colors that are distributed throughout a room in a way that bring a sense of stability.

When you are home decorating, colors combinations can be chosen using the color wheel. This helps you to get the colors that help to portray a particular feeling in each room of the house. The decorating of each room should start off with a primary color – red, blue or yellow – that works with whatever style of decorating your are using. You can combine these colors to create your secondary colors or use various hues of the same color.

The use of home decorating colors affects the mood of a room. Some colors lighten you mood, while others tend to depress you. Because colors affect moods, you can choose different colors to suit the personalities of everyone in the home. Active people like to have colors such as shades or orange, yellow and red. These colors actually seem to dominate a room, but they do help to create an upbeat ambiance. These colors work well in a room with a fireplace as they match the colors of the fire and the glowing embers.
